1. Choose Wide Or Narrow Deck Boards

Denali Deck boards are available in narrow (5/4 x 4 or 2 x 4) and wide (5/4 x 6 or 2 x 6). Decks typically are constructed with a 6" width. Narrower 4" boards are suitable for more specific applications that warrant increased stability: decks low to the ground, around pools, diagonal or herringbone patterns.

2. Decide To Stain Your Deck Or Go Natural

The beautiful golden color of Denali Cedar can be maintained and enhanced by protection with a deck stain. For maximum protection, pre-stain clean decking boards prior to construction. Stain all sides and ends. As you build, stain each new cut end. Select a penetrating oil with UV protection, water repellency and a mildewcide. Do not paint...it will peel. If you like a stain color with pigment, test it first on a sample. Without a stain, Denali cedar will gradually turn silver-gray with natural weathering character. The unstained wood should be cleaned annually to remove any mildew, mold or algae.

3. Ask Questions About Your Decking Project

Prior to installation, consult your local building department for required permits and safety codes in your town.

4. Work With Your Deck Builder

Inquire about blind or hidden fastening for your deck. This method presents a visually smooth surface. Keep in mind however, that it will be more difficult to replace a board in the future if needed. For face fastening, ask your builder to use stainless steel screws. Pre-drill all holes. For either method, deck boards must be properly spaced. Denali Cedar is carefully kiln dried. It needs room to expand slightly when installed. Proper spacing is a minimum of 1/8" between boards.

Deck Care and Maintenance

Clean your deck every year. Use a cleaning product formulated for wood decks, available at your local lumberyard. Scrape debris from between deck boards. Reapply stain as recommended.
