Manage the Application

Yellow cedar trim on a beautiful home

Key to all trim applications are well-documented techniques to manage moisture away from the building.

TIP: Make sure all vertical trim runs past intersecting horizontal trim to direct water flow downwards.

Prep for Paint

90% of house trim is painted. Ask your builder to have your trim pre-primed prior to delivery, even if you have not settled on topcoat color. A professional pre-primer will coat all sides evenly in a controlled environment. When you are ready for the final topcoat to be applied on site, make sure moisture readings of the trim are within the correct range. Your builder should have a moisture meter.

TIP: Insist that your builder prime the fresh cut ends as he cuts lengths to size. This keeps moisture from wicking into your trim.
